It all started with an ad in the paper and grew from there...

Seoulsisters is, as far as we can tell, the first and only 'official' group for English-speaking queer and queer-friendly women in Seoul. Over the past decade, it has grown from an informal collection of women to a tried & true organization that includes almost 200 women from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, coming together online and in person to meet new friends, discuss queer-themed topics and experience life in Korea.

Map of Korea and neighbouring countriesWe recently changed our name back to Seoulsisters, the original name of the group. We have also been known as Sappho ROK and Belles of Queerea (BOQ).

Most of our members are expatriates from the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, but our membership does not end there. We also have a number of bi-lingual Korean members who join in the fun and help us navigate our way through culture and language.

forum

Our freshly-launched online forum also helps bring together women from across the globe to chat, rant, rave and connect in a safe and friendly environment. We would invite anyone to register for the service and try it out! You can point your browser to: www.seoulsisters.org/forum .

meetings

You can find us in person twice a month on the first and third Saturdays. We hold regular club/bar nights and spend time exploring Korea through cultural tours, discussion clubs and other organized events. Details for upcoming meetings are posted on the public area of our forum. This is to help people abroad and in other cities who are not on the listserv to obtain information easily and without having to send us a direct email.

An informal planning committee also meets once a month to help coordinate upcoming events and brainstorm for the future. If you are interested in joining the planning committee, email info@seoulsisters.org.

mailing list

Most importantly, we offer a listserv (email list) for members of the group that can be used to post community events, buy & sell ads, advertisements for queer-friendly services and messages for other members. To get "on the list", women must first come to a Seoulsisters meeting and introduce themselves to a coordinator. This extra step ens ures that everyone on the list is familiar with who we are and what we do, and it also allows us to know that our postings will be received with friendly ears.

For more information about Seoulsisters or to contact a coordinator, please send an email to: info@seoulsisters.org . We work on a volunteer basis, so if you don°Øt hear back from us right away, rest assured we will respond as soon as possible.

other events

Seoulsisters also holds other events like parties, fundraisers and shows. In 2005 and 2006 we've had parties for Valentine's Day and Halloween, and organised Drag King shows and a queer book launch.

not in seoul?

Many of our members don't live in Seoul. Some live in other city or country areas of Korea, and some lived in Korea at some point and now live elsewhere. Either way, you are welcome to join the Seoulsisters mailing list. If you want information about the queer community in other Korean cities, there is information on our website.
